Pineapple farmers upbeat over rising prices

Growing charges of pineapple have brought the hopes of steady returns for the farming neighborhood this harvest period after two consecutive several years of distress.

“Since January, we are having superior charges with farm gate value of GI-tagged Vazhakulam pineapple specific grade fetching ₹29 for each kg and the regular environmentally friendly range ₹26. Ripe fruits command ₹30. Retail charges have also doubled from the farm gate stage,” Newborn John, president, Pineapple Growers Association Keralam, told BusinessLine.

He attributed the northward value motion to a 15 for each cent fall in manufacturing from last year’s figure of 4 lakh tonnes. Many tiny and medium farmers have stayed away from pineapple cultivation after struggling losses thanks to floods in the last two several years.
