The “innovation industry” has become a sprawling chatting store, one particular that spans academia, the private consultancy sector, and the civil service. All share a mutual curiosity in advertising and marketing the concept of the state as a benevolent and wise shepherd of innovation. Fentem’s working experience confounds this perception.

“There are little ones in India who think the state invented the Iphone, and not Apple”, Fentem despairs. He attributes this to relentless marketing of academics such as Professor Mariana Mazzucato, who popularised this pretty claim in her 2013 book The Entrepreneurial Point out.

But thanks to unceasing marketing by the BBC and the European Union’s innovation bureaucrats, the concept unfold. And a new course has emerged – a “Blob”, to use one particular of Cummings’ favorite phrases. 

“Innovation attracts people today who essentially don’t want to innovate. They don’t genuinely have any comprehending of it. If they did, they’d be performing some startup, or doing work for a business like Apple,” Fentem suggests. Nobody in the community sector is harmed by advertising and marketing Mazzacato’s mythology, he adds: “They all reward.”

And as soon as they have the ear of the state, innovation experts such as Mazzucato devise more roles for people today just like her – diluting the input of technologists or engineers. For instance, Mazzucato’s 2019 paper for the European Union highlighted the need to convey more citizens into the method.

The STEM aspect of innovation was explicitly demoted: “Rather than focusing on purely technological challenges,” Mazzucato encouraged, “we can aim innovation attempts to remedy societal worries that entail technological transform, institutional and behavioural transform and regulatory change”.
