Fair Trade Banner Workshop - 4 March 2006
The banner was supplied by the Fairtrade Foundation. The children of St Francis' Sunday School drew a map of the world based on the Peter's Projection which gives a more accurate representation of the relative areas of the five continents.
It was drawn upside down, partly to make it more eyecatching, but also to illustrate our belief that Fairtrade can turn the rules of international trade upside down in favour of the world's poorest people. We decorated the map using labels from Fairtrade products collected by members of our congregations (for which many thanks!).
We stopped halfway through for a break to drink Fairtrade tea and coffee and nibble Fairtrade snacks. When we had finished the banner we gathered for a sing song, led by Melody and her musicians, when we twisted our tongues round a couple of international songs.
The banner will be available for use in worship in each of the three churches over the next few weeks, as well as making appearances at our Fairtrade stall on North Street this Saturday morning (11 March) and possibly the Oxfam Fairtrade stall at the Tobacco Factory on Sunday 19 March. We also hope that it will be a parish resource in years to come.
